Tiny Arcade – A Retro Tiny Playable Game Cabinet

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Tiny Arcade Update
about 10 years ago – Fri, Jan 29, 2016 at 10:30:37 PM

Thank you all for your support for the Tiny Arcade!  We've been hard at work on this over the last month and wanted to share with everyone the current status.

Production Status

Production has been proceeding very well - we've ordered production quantities of all of the components needed for the electronics, and have received in some of the main ones, like the raw OLEDs themselves.  We also have the production version of the TinyScreen+ PCBs in and have started on the electronics production of these boards at our facility in here in Akron, Ohio.

We've also received in updated versions of the flex board for the joystick and switches, this new version incorporates some changes from the pictures shown in the campaign (integrated microSD card slot, volume control), and we've ordered production quantities of these boards, these should arrive in mid Feb and we'll start building the production volumes then.

With the latest flex boards in hand, we were able to finish up the final tweaks to the arcade cabinet design to make sure everything fit well mechanically.

So far we're on track to still deliver units on time, assuming our last few major components come in on schedule (joysticks mainly).

Software Update

We've just posted a major update to the TinyScreen Arduino library on our github page, which adds support for the TinyScreen+ and makes some other minor changes. You can find the update here.

Developers Units

We have a number of great developers already working on some games for this for the past few months, and will be able to get more developer units out very soon.  If you contacted us before about being a developer you should be getting your unit in the next two weeks.  We'll also have a few additional units - so if you're a game developer or a hard core Arduino developer that wants to contribute games, send me an email ([email protected]) with your qualifications and we'll talk with you more about it.

Games

We're busy creating games as well, and some of our great developers that have their hands on early hardware have also been busy.  Eike Decker has created a number of games for the TinyScreen (like Tiny Invaders and Tiny Asteroids), and his latest for the Tiny Arcade is TinyTino, with a screen shot shown below.  You can follow his update on his blog at http://tinyduinogames.de/

Magnus Runesson is a long time programmer and developer of many games (including Angry Birds 2), he also started a blog (http://tinyarcade.fantastic.computer/) about development on the Tiny Arcade and has early hardware, he's been creating a Tiny Shooter game that you can see some early screenshots of here:

Surveys

We plan to send out surveys via Backerkit in mid February, which will allow you to specify things about your order, such as what type of material you would like this made off (clear acrylic, black acrylic or wood), as well as get your current shipping address.  You will also have the option to additional items to your order, like a second case or additional units.

Thanks again for all your support!  The Tiny Arcade has been a lot of fun and we can't wait to get them out to everyone!!!

over 10 years ago – Wed, Dec 02, 2015 at 08:51:09 PM

Thank you all for your support, we're just about 10 days into the campaign and are close to twice our goal!  Thank you all!

Tiny Arcade in the News

I had the great experience to travel to New York about two weeks ago to talk with Mashable about the Tiny Arcade, below is the video they put up on their site about it:

Game Update

After launching the campaign one of the biggest questions we get is about games - like what games will be available?  We definitely plan on having a number of free games available when the Tiny Arcade launches both from us and outside open source developers.  One of our backers from last years TinyScreen campaign shared with us his version of Tiny Tetris, which you download now from his Hackster.io page

Call for Developers

Are you a game developer or hard core Arduino developer?  We have a few early development kits available for backers who want to help contribute games.  If interested, please send me an email ([email protected]) with your qualifications and we'll talk with you more about it.

Thanks!
